[Explicit] Kevin Costner On Gene Hackman · Dec. 1, 2014

"He went to that place that was respectful to me, and I never forgot."

(00:00:00):

I will tell you, you know, I'm asked sometimes who's the best actor.

(00:00:04):

Very impossible question because I'm going to leave really good actors,

(00:00:09):

you know,

(00:00:09):

not on the list.

(00:00:10):

They are on the list.

(00:00:12):

But if somebody said to me, you know, what actor just really, really blew you away, okay?

(00:00:18):

So now we're not saying best, but we know what we're saying.

(00:00:22):

And I'd say Gene Hackman.

(00:00:25):

It was the most real.

(00:00:27):

I'll tell you a story about Gene Hackman.

(00:00:29):

You wanna hear it?

(00:00:31):

Yes.

(00:00:33):

I was making no way out.

(00:00:34):

And it seemed to me that every scene was happening around this desk.

(00:00:41):

And we get to the scene where I learned that my girlfriend has been killed.

(00:00:46):

And the scene started at the desk and I said, this isn't right.

(00:00:50):

And I said, it's gotta be somewhere else.

(00:00:53):

I mean,

(00:00:54):

I'm being called at three in the morning here by a guy who's been a total dick to me,

(00:00:59):

Gene Hackman's character.

(00:01:01):

And I said, now he needs me.

(00:01:04):

Now he needs me at three in the morning.

(00:01:08):

You think he's going to stand me in front of the desk?

(00:01:10):

I think he's going to have a fucking cup of tea waiting for me and sit in the couch

(00:01:14):

and be kind of nice to me.

(00:01:16):

Maybe kissing my ass just a little bit.

(00:01:18):

Not so I'd know it, but there should be something different about it.

(00:01:22):

No, we're going to do it at the desk.

(00:01:25):

So I tried at the desk and finally I get a little pissed.

(00:01:30):

And finally I said, you know, it's over here.

(00:01:34):

It's over here.

(00:01:37):

And finally, and I said, well, what about Gene?

(00:01:39):

I said, well, Gene can do whatever he does.

(00:01:42):

It's up to Gene what he wants to do.

(00:01:43):

I'm going to be here.

(00:01:44):

And I think I want to be sitting here.

(00:01:47):

I think I want some orange juice and some donuts and some shit brought to me.

(00:01:51):

And you can figure it out.

(00:01:52):

You can go to catering and get them for all I care.

(00:01:56):

And it was like, ooh.

(00:02:01):

And so

(00:02:02):

I said, let me show you.

(00:02:03):

So I start to show,

(00:02:04):

and as I'm doing a scene,

(00:02:06):

I'm saying about right now is maybe when the donuts could come in,

(00:02:09):

and finally I was like,

(00:02:10):

we're not doing that,

(00:02:10):

we're gonna be over here at the desk.

(00:02:12):

So we go, fine.

(00:02:15):

So we go over to the desk, now we're gonna rehearse again.

(00:02:17):

Camera probably can't find me for five minutes.

(00:02:22):

So I go to the desk, and I start to do this scene again.

(00:02:26):

And all of a sudden,

(00:02:27):

something in me,

(00:02:29):

the same voice that was in me that said,

(00:02:31):

go be an actor,

(00:02:31):

said,

(00:02:32):

you know what?

(00:02:33):

It's over here.

(00:02:34):

It's over here at this table.

(00:02:36):

So you sort out where the coffee and stuff is from.

(00:02:39):

So we do that scene.

(00:02:41):

And Gene's brilliant.

(00:02:42):

He just hangs out over by the window and does whatever he wants.

(00:02:45):

So now it's the end of the day.

(00:02:49):

And I'm walking out to my car.

(00:02:51):

And Gene's walking out to his car and he said, hey, can I talk to you?

(00:02:59):

I said, yeah.

(00:03:00):

So I walk over to him and he said,

(00:03:01):

you know,

(00:03:05):

if you ever do that to another fucking director in front of me again,

(00:03:08):

I'll fucking kill you.

(00:03:12):

But he didn't say that.

(00:03:14):

That's what I thought he was gonna say.

(00:03:19):

He said, you know,

(00:03:22):

I watched you today and I went through a divorce about three years ago.

(00:03:31):

I've been doing a lot of shitty movies and I've been trying to pay for this divorce

(00:03:38):

and kinda didn't feel about acting the way I've felt for a long time.

(00:03:47):

And he goes, I watched you today.

(00:03:51):

I used to feel like that.

(00:03:53):

He said, I was really happy to see you do that.

(00:03:56):

And then he got into his car and he drove off.

(00:03:58):

It was an important moment for me,

(00:04:03):

because I had been thinking about this script a lot,

(00:04:06):

maybe more than people that were making it.

(00:04:09):

And it was a moment and I thought he was gonna hand me my head and I was gonna just

(00:04:15):

listen to it,

(00:04:16):

but he didn't at all.

(00:04:17):

He went to that place that was respectful to me and I'll never forgot, I never forgot it.
